Heart is a rock band formed by Ann and Nancy Wilson, who come from the Seattle area. Most of Heart’s hit singles and albums were in the 70s and 80s. In 1977, the group appeared and did a live version of “Crazy on You” on Burt Sugarman’s The Midnight Special. This was the debut single for Heart, and it is on the debut album, “Dreamboat Annie.” The single only peaked at #35 on the Billboard Hot 100, but the group had loads of big singles after that. And this song is not as conducive to radio as many others because it relies on that guitar intro. Such a thing could help album sales even it it does not chart high on the singles chart.
Of particular note is Nancy Wilson’s guitar solo to start the song. She is amazing as the lead guitarist here. Ann Wilson has a lot of respect as a female rock singer, but I found this particular vocal inconsistent. Maybe it’s the recording, or maybe it was just the sound that day. But she is definitely a better singer than what you see in this “Crazy For You” 1977 performance.
