On December 6, 2012 possession of marijuana for recreational use became legal in the state of Washington. In this CNN news video, NORML Executive Director Allen St. Pierre is interviewed about the new pot laws. Soledad O’Brien is conducting the interview.
NORML is the National Organization For The Reform Of Marijuana Laws. This organization advocates for the legalization of marijuana.
For now, St. Pierre says it’s a celebration for change taking place. However, it doesn’t completely make marijuana legal for public use because it is still currently illegal under federal law.
St. Pierre believes that this trend of legalizing marijuana for recreational use will spread to the West and East Coast on a wide scale within 10 years. But he still thinks it could take decades for the rest of the country to get on board.
