This incident occurred on Sunday, January 13, 2013. It was about 5 in the evening.

The accident occurred on North Main Street.
Victim:
1. Some additional individuals were injured. But the one person who was killed was Sam Longo. Sam was 82 years old. He lived in West Islip.
2. Ann Gilbert was a passenger in Longo’s car. She is 79 and was seriously injured.
3. Robert Schutt drove another car that was struck by the suspect. However, he sustained only minor injuries.
Suspect:
Thomas Herman is 46 years old. In addition to hit and run, he is charged with the drug equivalent of driving drunk. This greatly increases his odds of being charged with homicide. However, the ABC report did not mention any manslaughter charges. The police may still file those charges at a later date.
Cause:
Police believe that Thomas Herman was high on drugs. He was driving recklessly and hit many cars while barreling down the street. Near the end of the deadly ride, he slammed into victim Longo’s car and another car (Robert Schutt’s) and then hit a utility pole. Herman was also injured but is expected to survive. Along the way, car parts were littered all over the road from the collisions caused by Herman’s ride of terror.
