Fort Myers, Florida Crash News: John And Marilyn Steffen Killed In 2-Vehicle Accident With Deputy Sheriff’s Cruiser

A couple was killed when accidentally pulling out in front of a sheriff’s deputy’s police cruiser (Lee County). This crash occurred in Fort Myers, Florida.

Where:

Palm Beach Boulevard

When:

Sunday, March 3, 2013, at about 9:30 in the morning

Victims:

1. John Steffen was 84 years old. He lived in Fort Myers for part of the year. The rest of his time was spent in Pandora, Ohio.

2. Marilyn Steffen was 77 years old. Presumably, the two are married. But to be clear, the report did not specifically say that.

Cause:

Authorities believe that John Steffen pulled out onto Palm Beach Boulevard as two cruisers were driving by with their emergency lights on. They were responding to a call at the time. The second cruiser impacted the Steffen vehicle on the passenger side.

Criminal Charges:

From the description, it sounds as if the sheriff’s cruiser simply didn’t have time to avoid the accident. And Steffen likely just failed to see the two cruisers coming for some unknown reason. Thus, while there is no word on criminal charges, they seem unlikely in a case like this.
