The following crime and crash news video is provided by the CBS affiliate in Chicago, Illinois. It is about the death of a man who was killed when he was allegedly run off the road. The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene of the incident on foot, abandoning his vehicle.
Where:
Near Racine and 100th Street
When:
Saturday, March 9, 2013, at about 1 in the morning
Victim:
Corey Owens was 31 years old. He lived in Chicago.
Suspect:
The other driver is believed to have been driving a Land Rover. In fact, the Land Rover was left at the scene of the accident, and the driver was nowhere to be found.
Cause:
Owens’s vehicle slammed through a fence and went down an embankment. He was then thrown from the vehicle and landed on Interstate 57.
Criminal Charges:
At a minimum, the suspect would be expected to face charges on a hit and run. Whether he or she can be charged with murder or a lesser homicide depends on the facts and strength of those facts. Was this an intentional act, for example? This is a crucial question which must be answered when considering other charges.
Note: The wording in the CBS report is puzzling. It is not at all clear from the report why they are saying a Land Rover ran Owens off the road. That usually implies an intentional act. Yet, the report provides no evidence of an intentional act. It’s a bit of a strange article in that respect that is too ambiguous. However, the video does say that Owens “may have been” intentionally run off the road.
