CNN News Video: Williston, Florida - Geologist Jerry Black Shows The Inside Of a Florida Sinkhole (The Devil’s Den)

Sinkholes have been in the news the past few days because a Florida man was swallowed up by a sinkhole and presumed dead. The victim was Jeff Bush, and that incident occurred in the Tampa area.

In this CNN video, geologist Jerry Black shows off the inside of a sinkhole. It is located in Williston, Florida. To be clear, it is what a sinkhole looks like before all the dirt, rocks, and other material cave in and fill it up.

As you can see from the video, a sinkhole is essentially a cave or cavity. And Black says that these sinkhole/caverns are commonly found throughout Florida. Many other state residents are living right above one. However, he did not give the percentage of Florida residents whose houses are potentially in danger of being swallowed up by a sinkhole.

What makes a sinkhole develop?

Rain water seeps into the ground and eats away at limestone. The cavities then develop, and some of them can become unstable enough so that the soil above collapsed in on the hole.

Notes:

The sinkhole (cavity) in this video is actually a tourist attraction called the “Devil’s Den.” You can even go diving in water that is found inside the Devil’s Den. It was not clear from the video and story whether the Devil’s Den is unstable and could possibly collapse on some tourists.

“It was not clear in the story whether Devils Den is unstable and could possibly collapse on some tourist”. Are you kidding me !!!! You have no commen sense to write a statement like that. I see you are a lawyer so it does not make clear in your bio if you have commen sense or not.I guess everyone will have to assume it is a big NO on commen sense. Did the story make it unclear rocks would not fall on tourist???? CNN and every bad news site like this one would be making very sure it was reporting that the rocks were falling everyday on tourist. I googled accidents at Devils Den and came up with no hits. I did get hits from people dying at other springs in the southeast for accidents but not A single one for Devils’ Den. Sir you are what is wrong with this world ” telling the truth but not the whole truth” is real easy to get a message across but not a factual one.

You obviously didn’t see or ignored the word “possibly” in my statement. There is no accusation here. Try reading with a little less sensitivity. Do you have some kind of affiliation with Devils Den? State it if you do or explain why you are so upset.

I’m giving you one day to respond and explain yourself. Do you have an affiliation with Devil’s Den? That would explain how you misrepresented what I wrote, as I in no way said or implied that anyone was ever hurt at Devil’s Den. It’s a fair question that should have been asked on CNN and wasn’t. And anyone thinking of visiting there should be concerned about that cavity’s stability for their own personal safety. But there was no accusation. And your personal attack against me was equally below the belt and uncalled for.

Yes, you did use the word possible. I guess reading a story online fast in this case might give the impression it actually might fall in at any minute. Sorry, for my mistake
and the one day to explain it.
