The results show for American Idol 11′s Top 13 is set to air on FOX on Thursday, March 8, 2012, at 8 Eastern. Idol has a tradition of doing a group performance with the contestants on results-night episodes. These were invariably cheesy for years, as would be expected when you have like a dozen people singing only one song.
But in Season 10, the producers started pairing up contestants to sing duets instead of performances with the entire group. It is probably too early in the season to start doing that, so I guess we’ll get one of the cheesy group numbers tonight during the Top 13 episode.
Also tonight, the judges will pick between the lowest male and female vote getters to send one contestant home. I personally love the save, but this is just a bad way to use a save if the person eliminated tonight was not the lowest vote getter. The normal save does not eliminate someone who doesn’t get the lowest votes. It saves the contestant who DID get the lowest number of votes. This is a bad precedent, especially with the one-male, one-female bottom 2. This is almost a ripoff of the X Factor, and the last thing American Idol needs is to start looking like the cheesy and gimmick-filled X Factor.
Tune in tonight to see the group performance of the American Idol 2012 Top 13 and see which boy and girl got the lowest number of votes. I’ll recap the group performance after it is aired.
Well, that was actually a darn good group performance. Season 11 has a lot of great singers, and many of us showed their stripes on that “As” number. Phillip Phillips was also back from being sick at the hospital today from abdominal pains.
