Naima Adedapo is a singer and dancer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She has made it to the Top 11 on the 10th season of American Idol (2011). This week is Motown Week.
From the beginning, I predicted that Naima Adedapo would not have the passion for singing to win this show. At heart, she is actually a dancer. In fact, the bulk of praise she has gotten online is her style and visual performance of Rihanna’s “Umbrella.” Meanwhile, Naima is consistently criticized by the judges for failing to stay on pitch.
It is my opinion that Adedapo was chosen for her style, not for singing talent. Simply put, she is just not a particularly good singer. I challenge anyone to go back to all of her audition performances and point out any consistency (other than her visual flair, which doesn’t go very far in a singing contest).
So whether the theme is Motown Week or nursery rhymes, the only way Naima is going to get praise is by either dancing or adding reggae or rap in a gimmicky way that actually shows little in the way of talent. Reggae is nothing more than employing a certain accent. It’s not like it takes special vocal skill. And rappers don’t win national TV singing contests.
Finally, at least Taylor Hicks, who partly won for his visual performance skills, is actually a good singer. The same cannot be said for Adedapo. She may survive the Top 11 Motown Week, but the writing on the wall is getting closer. She could go at any time now and has no chance of winning the 10th season of American Idol.
