One of the best ways to monetize a blog is Google AdSense. This leading online ad network allows you to sign up (google.com/adsense) and place ads on your website or blog. You then keep a portion of the profits (68% is what you keep from valid clicks at the time of this writing). But the problem for many WordPress bloggers is that they lack the technical skills to integrate AdSense into their blogs.
AdSense Integrator solves this problem. It is a plugin that seamlessly places AdSense ads into all (or some of) the posts and pages on your WordPress blog. I have very limited technical computer knowledge and was able to quickly put AdSense on my WritingShares blog. It only took about an hour, and I had never even downloaded a plugin before this. So I was learning how to download plugins plus use AdSense Integrator at the same time.
Unlike many plugins, the beauty of Integrator is that it can place the AdSense ads within the text/content of your posts. This is important because placing ads only on the side of the page (the menu area or margin of the pages) is not very profitable compared to integrating them into the text of your actual posts and content.
However, it’s no secret that programmers like those who made Integrator tend to be poor at providing instructions for using the plugin. That’s why I have written this article. You won’t learn every single feature of the plugin here. But you will learn how to quickly get the ads on your WordPress blog without any special technical knowledge.
Note: These instructions are for AdSense Integrator Version 1.8.0. There are some older and perhaps newer versions that are not applicable to the below usage instructions for this WordPress plugin.
Step 1:
Log into your Dashboard and look for the “Plugins” section. Click on that and then “Add New.”
Step 2:
Run a search for “AdSense Integrator” on the next page. You will then find it and can install it by clicking the self-explanatory links. This is easy and requires no special knowledge. The plugin pretty much installs itself.
Step 3:
Once you have it installed, click “Setup.” You will then see a sort of control panel for Integrator.
Step 4:
There is a “Create a New Ad” section. This is where you add your AdSense code and set up your ads.
a. Under “Ads Name,” select any name you want for your AdSense ads.
b. “Ads Text” is the exact code you get from your Google AdSense account. I will not go over in this article how to get your code, but you can find lessons all over the Internet if you are a newbie and don’t know how to generate your AdSense code. Just put the code in this “Ads Text” block.
c. Under “Repetitions,” select 1, 2 or 3. Google allows a maximum of 3 ad blocks for each type of ad per page. While Integrator is supposed to block any further ads, just select a maximum of 3 to be on the safe side.
d. “In Post Position” looks kind of confusing, but it is simply an ad-placement graphic. Check off the places where you would like your ads to appear in your WordPress posts and pages. I personally recommend a block of ads at the top and bottom of the text. The goal here is to integrate the ads with your content to increase the number of clicks.
Warning: This should go without saying, but NEVER click on your own ads. Google WILL terminate your account if you try to cheat the system by clicking on your own ads or using any kind of programs to generate fraudulent clicks. This includes the excuse of “testing” your ads. That is fraud and is not tolerated.
e. You can just check off all options in “Sections.” This simply describes all of the different kinds of pages created in WordPress. Unless you have some specific reason to disable ads on certain pages, there is no reason not to display them on all pages.
f. The “Margins” section is used to create the size of the margins between your content and AdSense ad blocks. You want to keep this number small for integration purposes. Select “px” for unit of measure and 1 or 2 for the top, bottom, left and right margins.
After you have entered that information, save your new ad.
Note: Under “Saved Ads,” there is a confusing line that says “Embed code for posts/pages.” This makes it sound like you have to manually add that code to all posts. This is not true. Once you save your ad into AdSense Integrator, the ad blocks should start showing up automatically. If they do not, there is probably an issue with your ad code. Check that again if your ads do not appear.
Note: At the top of the Integrator page (after you click “Setup”), there are options to disable ads for everyone, disable for administrators and even to enable for only administrators. I prefer to disable my AdSense ads for me (the administrator) because it creates a false number of ad impressions in AdSense stats. However, do NOT disable ads in Integrator for administrators until you have tested them and confirm that they are appearing on your WordPress pages.
