Casey Abrams is a popular contestant on the 10th season of American Idol (2011). He has done well so far on overall musical and performance skills but is certainly also a competent vocalist. For the Top 11, the Idol contestants have the Motown Week theme.
If Casey is allowed to break out an instrument this week, he could do something very unique and solidify his status as one of the favorites to win. Unfortunately, this is not certain to happen, as the producers seem to be preventing contestants from using an instrument. While it is not unreasonable to bar instruments all together, it seems silly to give a contestant like Casey Abrams a shot in the voting rounds and then take away that advantage. Either let the man do his thing or don’t give him a shot at the beginning.
In Hollywood Week, Casey pulled out the upright bass and gave a vocally and musically great performance of “Georgia on My Mind.” With the right song choice, he could have similar magic with Motown Week. Here’s hoping he gets that shot.
Regardless of what happens in the Top 11, Casey seems to have a pretty solid fan base built up and will likely survive several more weeks without the use of an instrument. Whether he wins may well depend on the decision by Nigel Lythgoe and the other producers regarding the use of instruments this season on American Idol.
