The following animal video is from The Weather Channel. It was uploaded to their website on August 4, 2012. KHNL provided images and reporting for this story.
Cara Ballard was on the shoreline in Honolulu, Hawaii when she discovered a seal. She first thought it was a baby monk seal. It was not a monk seal at all. In fact, the odd thing about this particular seal is that it is of a type that normally lives in the North Pacific Ocean, on a line going from Japan to the Bering Sea and then down to California. The out-of-place animal turned out to be a northern fur seal.
According to NOAA’s David Schofield, some people think the northern fur seal may have come on a ship. It also could have floated down on debris or gotten caught in a current.
The seal is in bad medical condition and apparently close to starvation and is dehydrated. However, it has now eaten 3 meals. For now, this animal is being kept at the Honolulu Zoo while it is being nursed back to health.
