NBC has announced that The Voice will have two seasons per year. Season 3 is coming up in the fall. Then, Season 4 will be a winter/spring show. It might be debuting after the Super Bowl again, but I haven’t seen any news on that yet.
This creates a potential dilemma for the judges. They didn’t really sign up for this much time. The current judges of Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, Christina Aguilera, and Blake Shelton will still appear in Season 3. That will air on the fall of 2012 with a two-hour episode on Mondays and a one-hour episode on Tuesdays.
Starting in the spring, we may have a different set of judges for The Voice. This would give time for the current crop to record music, act, go on tour, or engage in other projects. This is a good reason to have different judges, unlike the constant shuffling over at American Idol. On the other hand, Idol had a real stinker in Kara DioGuardi that they needed to get rid of. And the one-season stint of Ellen DeGeneres showed that she was not a good fit for a judge’s role because she wants to be too positive.
I wouldn’t mind seeing The Voice completely get rid of Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green. Christina plays games instead of sticking with talent (“I have to get rid of Jesse”), and Cee Lo makes horrible song choices for his team members. The pick of “Free Bird” for Juliet Simms in the finale shows he simply has no clue how to maximize a singer’s voice for live performances. In addition, while Cee Lo is tolerable on a personality level, Christina’s banter with the other judges virtually always makes her look jealous or like a desperate attention seeker. Go figure that she’s the highest paid one in the whole group even though she is the only one to ever create the uncomfortable silences. And she is very distracting when she interrupts and talks over the other judges.
Did I mention that I don’t like Christina Aguilera and would be fine if she is replaced as a judge on The Voice 4 and beyond?
But alas, the current set of judges is likely to return in the fall of 2013 even if a different set of judges takes the reins in the winter and spring season.
There is no word yet on the new crop of judges. I doubt that Paula Abdul or Nicole Scherzinger would join the panel, so we might see 4 new judges we have never seen before for The Voice 4.
