NBC New York Accident News Video For Canarsie, Brooklyn: Lorraine Ferguson Struck And Killed By Bus At Avenue K And 105th Street

The following NBC accident news video is from the New York affiliate. It is about the pedestrian death of Lorraine Ferguson, who was struck by a private bus in the Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn. The accident occurred on Friday morning, January 25, 2013. It was approximately 7:15 in the morning, as Lorraine was waiting on a different bus to go to work.

The scene of the accident was near the intersection of Avenue K and 105th Street.

The husband, Michael Ferguson, claims that the bus ran a stop sign. At the time of this report, the police have not issued an opinion on that claim. Rides Unlimited, the owner of the bus, had no comment, according to the New York Daily News. That article also says that the police do not expect to be filing criminal charges against the driver.

The husband, while probably being honest, seems to want it to be the bus driver’s fault. He tried to say the driver looked guilty because he cowered in the bus and paused before exiting the vehicle. Well, even an innocent person who just hit someone would be equally shocked. That is just as much a sign of being shocked as it would be of being responsible for causing the accident. And apparently no one else claimed that the bus driver ran a stop sign.

NBC New York Crime News Video: Marlboro Township, New Jersey Set To Put Armed Guards In Schools

The following NBC crime news video is from the New York affiliate. It aired on January 2, 2013.

The NRA, perhaps correctly but obviously with a great deal of self-interest, called for armed guards to be used in schools to prevent tragedies like Sandy Hook.

Marlboro Township is reportedly prepared to do just that. It plans on hiring armed guards for local schools.

For now, at least one police officer will be posted at Marlboro’s 8 schools. This plan is good for just the next 3 months so far.

I’m not totally opposed to using armed guards in schools but don’t think it is the best first step. Having an effective security system seems to be the best first step – a security system obviously more foolproof than what was installed at Sandy Hook. That one, while a reasonble effort, proved to not be enough.
