YouTube Video: America’s Got Talent 8 – Top 6 Finals – Teen Magician Collins Key’s Close-Up Magic (September 17, 2013)

Act: Collins Key

Genre: This is the teen magician.

Live Blogging Notes:

This is Collins’s first performance tonight of 2. And it is 4th out of 12 overall. This is his close-up magic routine. He turned two cards into one card while teasing Heidi and Mel B to kiss each other. They were each biting down on one side of the same two cards, and it turned into one.

America’s Got Talent 8 has reached its final week. There are 6 contestants left, and it’s all up to voters now to decide who wins one million dollars. The final performance episode is on Tuesday, September 17, 2013. Then, the grand finale results show is on September 18, 2013. That is when the new million-dollar winner will be revealed.

I will link to the official YouTube video for Collins Keys’s Top 6 finals performance (close-up magic trick) as soon as it has been uploaded onto AGT’s official channel.

Judges’ Comments On Key’s Performance:

Heidi was mesmerized by it. Howie says Collins is the master of confusion. Howard says he is a fan of his close-up magic. But he is a terrific performer. Mel B said it was one of his best performances. Howard wonders if the public at home got it, though.

Collins Key Predictions Before The Show Airs:

This guy is one of those acts who can seemingly do no wrong with the voters. He has had a couple of questionable weeks with not-so-good tricks. It’s obvious to people who try to figure out magic that Key uses shills. I just think there are better ways of doing magic than using obvious shills. The judges have not pointed this out at all. In fact, really only Howard has given any negative criticism at all, saying that Collins’s timing or pacing is not sharp.

I think we’ve seen the best of this guy already. I have ranked him 3rd, thinking that he has one good but not mind-blowing trick left. I would rank him lower but am keeping him at 3rd because he appears to have a strong fanbase built from the very beginning that is sticking with him to the end.

Predictions And Rankings For The Top 6 Finale:

As long as people are willing to vote in large numbers for a foreigner (Japanese guy) like Kenichi, then I think he will win. But certainly some percentage may feel that at least some of the million is going overseas and would prefer that the money stay here. That is not the way I think. But I know some Americans might not vote for Ebina for that reason. I’d like to think that is a small percentage, though. So before the show airs, I am still ranking Kenichi #1.

Forte has been consistent and probably deserves a #2 ranking. It starts to get more difficult here, though, because the other acts have been a bit inconsistent. I am only ranking Collins Key #3 because he seems to get the votes no matter what he does. His status as a favorite seems to have been locked up from the very beginning. Howard is right that his pacing is an issue.

At this point, I wouldn’t even be shocked if Jimmy Rose wins. He is the least deserving of being here. I only rank him 4th because he fits the demographic. In fact, he fits it so well that he could pull an upset win.

I have never considered Cami Bradley a favorite. She has been pretty consistent, but I consider it consistent above average, not consistently great. So I ranked her 5th before the finals air.

Taylor has been my second favorite. He has been just a little inconsistent. It is a little surprising that he ended up making the top 6. I think it’s going to be very difficult for a comedian to compete in this top 6. You can laugh and laugh. But will it be as impressive or moving as Kenichi? I doubt it.

YouTube Video: America’s Got Talent 8 – Top 6 Finals – Singer Cami Bradley’s “Believe” (September 17, 2013)

Act: Cami Bradley

Genre: Cami has been described as a church singer. But she is basically a pop singer and songwriter.

Live Blogging Notes:

This is Cami’s first performance of the finale. It is Cher’s “Believe.” This was her quarterfinals performance. “Believe” was the 3rd of 12 total performances in this finals episode. It was a good, emotional performance.

I will link to the official YouTube video for Cami Bradley’s Top 6 finals performance of “Believe” as soon as it has been uploaded onto AGT’s official channel.

Judges’ Comments On Cami’s Performance:

All 4 judges gave this a standing ovation. Howard now says Cami should win. He said something about finding her in a church. She was a caterpillar, and now she is a butterfly. Heidi likes the way she does the “Believe” song. It puts tears in people’s eyes. Mel B says people should vote for her. Howie says she is the best singer in the contest because she has a more unique sound (not sure if that is true at all, but that’s what he said).

Cami Bradley Predictions Before The Show Airs:

This singer went last in the top 12, so it’s no surprise she at least was in the Top 6 in voting and has made it to the finals. She also made it through every round without needing to be saved by the judges. Despite that, I rank her 5th out of 6 among the finals contestants. The only girl to ever win AGT was Bianca Ryan, in Season 1. Although I do love Bianca, competition was comparably very weak in Season 1. There was really no one to give her a serious challenge.

Besides that, I just haven’t been overly impressed with Cami’s vocals. They are good but certainly not as good as Forte, who I have ranked 2nd. I definitely think Bradley is a much better singer than Jimmy Rose. I only rank him ahead of her because he fits the voting demographic better.

Whether you look at it based on talent or based on voting demographics, Cami has an uphill battle in trying to win the million dollars.

Predictions And Rankings For The Top 6 Finale:

As long as people are willing to vote in large numbers for a foreigner (Japanese guy) like Kenichi, then I think he will win. I am only ranking Collins Key #3 because he seems to get the votes no matter what he does. His status as a favorite seems to have been locked up from the very beginning. YouTube Video: America’s Got Talent 8 – Top 6 Finals – Dancer Kenichi Ebina’s “Robo Matrix” (September 17, 2013)

Act: Kenichi Ebina

Genre: Kenichi is the Japanese dancer who creates original performances by interacting with characters on a screen. He also does some magic and did a flying illusion in the top 12.

Live Blogging Notes:

This is Kenichi’s first performance of the finale. It is called “Robo Matrix.”

This was a reprisal of his original audition. It could have been better. I mean, he improved it with some magic (twisting his arm around in a circle) and added some lasers to it. But the other routines are better than this. He needs to have something more creative for his second performance.

Judges’ Comments On Kenichi’s Performance:

Howie says to vote. He deserves to win. Howard says to vote and that he deserves to win. Heidi says this is her favorite performance all season. Mel B says he deserves to win, as well.

Kenichi Ebina Predictions Before The Show Airs:

In short, I am ranking this contestant #1 before the show airs. It’s clear that Howie has him pegged as the favorite to win. Howard possibly has him as the favorite, but it’s not quite as clear. Mel B and Heidi have not clearly stated a favorite among these 6 final acts.

If we are going on talent, Kenichi gets a check. If we are going on overall entertainment value and uniqueness, he gets checkmarks. On the traditional factors for success cited on these shows, you have to rank him at the top. There is some question that he may lose votes because he is a foreigner with a family in Japan. If he loses out, it might be because of that. Either way, this guy is getting his own show somewhere. He’s simply too unique and talented not to be getting work.

Predictions And Rankings For The Top 6 Finale:

As long as people are willing to vote in large numbers for a foreigner (Japanese guy) like Kenichi, then I think he will win. YouTube Video: America’s Got Talent 8 – Top 6 Finals – Country Singer Jimmy Rose – “Coal Keeps The Lights On” (September 17, 2013)

Act: Jimmy Rose

Genre: Jimmy is a country singer from Kentucky.

Live Blogging Notes:

This is Jimmy’s reprisal performance. It’s his original song, which is called “Coal Keeps The Lights On.” This is a great song, giving him a better chance to win probably. But he is going first tonight, at least in this first round of performances.

I will link to the official YouTube video for Jimmy Rose’s Top 6 finals performance of “Coal Keeps The Lights On” as soon as it has been uploaded onto AGT’s official channel.

Judges’ Comments On Rose’s Performance:

Mel B said she was not a fan in the beginning. She loves his voice and this performance. America should vote for him. Howie says it’s how he stacks up. But he delivered on this first performance. Howard says he has waited to hear this song again. He likes the original song. He said this was a great way to open the show. Heidi said he has the story but also the talent to back it up.

Jimmy Rose Predictions Before The Show Airs:

The thing making it difficult to rank Jimmy is that the producers have had him go last or next to last every single live round. That is best part of the lineup to get votes. So what if he goes first tonight? That’s where he should go, with Kenichi going last. Jimmy simply doesn’t deserve to be in the finals. Over Catapult? Absolutely no way. But as I state below, I wouldn’t even be surprised if Rose won the whole thing. He fits the voting demographic on this show perfectly, so it seems. He probably isn’t even an average singer but is certainly no better than average. The voters need to come to their senses and reward talent instead of voting on what they are used to seeing. Recognize the talent, for crying out loud.

Predictions And Rankings For The Top 6 Finale:

As long as people are willing to vote in large numbers for a foreigner (Japanese guy) like Kenichi, then I think he will win. YouTube Video: America’s Got Talent 8 – Top 12 (One Week Before Finals) – Cami Bradley’s “Livin On A Prayer” (September 10, 2013)

Act: Cami Bradley

Genre: This musician is a singer-songwriter. She sometimes plays the piano in her AGT performances but did not play in the Top 24 semifinals. Odds are she will play the piano this week. But we won’t know for sure until performance time.

Live Blogging Notes:

Cami Bradley closed the show. I don’t know why they put her last. But this really ups her pre-show chances of advancing. It’s not a total lock. But the contestant going last seems to almost always advance. However, it is quite competitive tonight, with plenty of great acts.

Cami sang Bon Jovi’s “Livin On A Prayer.” She played the piano. This performance, combined with closing the show, will probably get her in the top 6. There were a couple of weak spots. But otherwise, this was a good performance with an emotional connection.

America’s Got Talent 8 has whittled down to a top 12 from the 60 acts who made the live shows. This season, the top 12 is one week before the finals. So that means next week, AGT will crown the million-dollar winner. There will probably be 6 acts in the finals. However, the producers could change that if they want (they love to thrown curveballs on AGT).

I will link to the official YouTube video for Cami Bradley’s Top 12 (week before final) performance of “Livin On A Prayer” as soon as it has been uploaded onto AGT’s official channel.

Judges’ Comments On Cami’s Performance:

Heidi said she did it again. She made the song her own. Mel B said that was beautiful and a proper performance with heart and soul. Howie said again that Cami is great. He has a crush on her. Howard said she reminds him of Linda Ronstadt. He thinks she should advance.

Cami Bradley Predictions Before The Show Airs:

Generally speaking, male singers seem to have a big advantage on AGT. So going into this top 12, one week before the finals, Cami could be in trouble. Yet, she has done just fine in voting so far. Cami was in top 3 out of 12 in her quarterfinal group. And she was at least in the top 5 in the semifinals.

Like Jimmy Rose, it may be that Bradley is better as a songwriter than as a singer. I certainly think she is a better singer than Jimmy but not as good as Forte or Branden James. But Jimmy has a better story and is a country singer. Nothing seems to particularly favor Cami this week since she has a lot of stiff competition. So I ranked her only 10th out of the 12 acts.

Predictions And Rankings For The Top 12:

Overall, this is a really great top 12, with a variety of different acts. I have ranked them below based on my pre-show feelings of their odds of advancing. But as always, some acts do really well in their live performance. Others end up blowing it. But I definitely put Kenichi Ebina, Forte, Collins Key, and Brandon James as the top 4 right now. Kenichi is my personal favorite at the moment, followed by Taylor Williamson. But Taylor may have a hard time creating even more material after he’s used up the make-fun-of-Heidi gimmick. And Collins certainly needs a better trick than the one in the semifinals. My guess is Key will bounce back with something easier to understand and will make it to the finals.

Question: Kenichi will almost certainly make the finals next week. But will people vote in large enough numbers for a non-American when they know they are giving someone one million dollars? That would be a first for AGT. But regardless, Kenichi is going to be making a lot of money after this show is over one way or another.

So I am going to rank the acts now, but this is very difficult once you get past Kenichi and Forte.

1. Kenichi Ebina
2. Forte
3. Collins Key
4. Branden James
5. D’Angelo & Amanda (choreography will probably be better this week)
6. Catapult Entertainment (story needs to be much better this round)
7. Taylor Williamson
8. Innovative Force
9. Jimmy Rose
10. Cami Bradley
11. Chicago Boyz
12. KriStef Brothers

These are not particularly strong predictions after the top 3 or 4. I wouldn’t even be shocked if the Chicago Boyz or KriStef Brothers managed to make the top 6.

YouTube Video: America’s Got Talent 8 – Top 12 (One Week Before Finals) – Country Singer Jimmy Rose’s “God Gave Me You” (September 10, 2013)

Act: Jimmy Rose

Genre: Country Singer

Live Blogging Notes:

Jimmy went 11th out of the 12 performances. They seem to want this guy in the finals, even saying his mom couldn’t make it to the show because she has congestive heart failure.

Rose sang Blake Shelton’s “God Gave Me You.” It was probably his best performance in the last 3 rounds.

America’s Got Talent 8 has whittled down to a top 12 from the 60 acts who made the live shows. This season, the top 12 is one week before the finals. So that means next week, AGT will crown the million-dollar winner. There will probably be 6 acts in the finals. Judges’ Comments On Jimmy Rose’s Performance:

No judges gave this a standing ovation, but a lot of the audience members did. Howie said he was great. But he didn’t go “wow.” Mel B absolutely loves Jimmy Rose. He has grown on her. Heidi said it was not her favorite act of the night. But he was still good. Howard agreed with Howie. It wasn’t really anything special or emotional. It should be riskier.

Jimmy Rose Predictions Before The Show Airs:

The producers seem to love this dude. He was picked to go last in both the quarterfinals and semifinals. So with the best performance order for getting votes, it’s not that surprising that Rose has slipped into the top 12. I’ll scream if they pick him to go last again this episode. It’s not deserved. In all honesty, he just isn’t a very good singer. He had that one good original song. But this isn’t a songwriter’s contest. I have ranked Jimmy 9th this week. I won’t be shocked if he advances because this voting demographic loves its country singers. But maybe the voters will finally get it right this week.

YouTube Video: America’s Got Talent 8 – Top 12 (One Week Before Finals) – Kenichi Ebina (September 10, 2013)

Act: Kenichi Ebina

Genre: Variety dance show with video interplay, some magic, etc.

Live Blogging Notes:

Forget about it. He’s going to the finals. He made it look like he was flying. And he had some great dancing moves, as well. This was a great mix of magic and dance. The angel thing was unnecessary. But overall, the performance will get him into the finals.

America’s Got Talent 8 has whittled down to a top 12 from the 60 acts who made the live shows. This season, the top 12 is one week before the finals. So that means next week, AGT will crown the million-dollar winner. There will probably be 6 acts in the finals. Judges’ Comments On Kenichi’s Performance:

Mel B thought the whole thing was unbelievable. And Heidi thought it was beautiful. Howie says this is the man you should vote for. Howard says he is at least the top two. He is a Kenichi fan for life.

Kenichi Ebina Predictions Before The Show Airs:

I have personally ranked this contestant #1 this week out of all 12 remaining acts. And Howie has already said twice that he should win the million dollars. Howie’s words are not golden as far as picking a winner. But when he says this, you pretty much know that you are looking at a likely finalist. As I state below, I do wonder if America will vote for someone that appears to be a foreigner. I know Kenichi has a work visa at a minimum. I don’t think the show has said whether he is a citizen, but he did say his family is in Japan. But for this week, I expect Ebina to sail through to next week’s finals.

YouTube Video: America’s Got Talent 8 – Top 12 (One Week Before Finals) – Collins Key’s Watch Magic Trick (September 10, 2013)

Act: Collins Key

Genre: Teen Magician

Live Blogging Notes:

The trick was that Collins changed the time on Nick’s watch, put it in one of 3 bags, and had Howie change the time on his watch. He had the judges pick the bags, and it was the right bag. That seemed silly, but the watches were changed to the exact same time. It seems the table is a prop or something, and that someone changed the watch’s time. But overall, this was a good trick.

I will link to the official YouTube video for Collins Key’s Top 12 (week before final) magic performance as soon as it has been uploaded onto AGT’s official channel.

Judges’ Comments On Collins’s Performance:

Time was running short. Howard liked it but said the pacing needs to be better. Mel B enjoyed this trick. She doesn’t know how he did it.

Collins Key Predictions Before The Show Airs:

Even not having a particularly smooth truck in the top 24 semifinals, Collins was at least in the top 5 in voting in his group of 12. Howard said he almost hit his X last time. That trick really wasn’t that good unless you are a fan who doesn’t understand tricks used to force the right audience member on stage. It ain’t hard to do. And it simply was not a very good trick.

But because Collins has built up a fan base, he got through, anyway. And I would imagine he will bounce back bigger this week with better stage presence and pacing. So I have ranked Key 3rd out of 12 and predict before seeing the performances that he will probably advance.

YouTube Video: America’s Got Talent 8 – Top 12 (One Week Before Finals) – Comedian Taylor Williamson (September 10, 2013)

Act: Taylor Williamson

Genre: Standup Comedy

Live Blogging Notes:

Taylor had a family theme for this set. It was funny. I laughed out loud. He talked about first cousins marrying and his racist grandma.

America’s Got Talent 8 has whittled down to a top 12 from the 60 acts who made the live shows. This season, the top 12 is one week before the finals. Judges’ Comments On Taylor’s Performance:

Heidi says he is growing on her. Taylor said he’d love to be a fungus growing on Heidi. But she doesn’t seem too crazy about it. Howard liked his edgier material and would love to see him in the finals. Mel B apparently didn’t like it that much, so Taylor said to switch it back to Howard. Howie says a comedian writes his own material. It is wow.

Taylor told all the kids that homework sucks, and that he loves NASCAR and One Direction.

Taylor Williamson Predictions Before The Show Airs:

Taylor has been one of my personal favorite acts from the beginning. And he seems to have some pretty good but not super voter support. For example, he got 4th in voting in the quarterfinals out of 12 acts. Only 4 made it, so he could have been sent home. In the top 24, Taylor was in the top 5 out of 12, but his exact voting results were not announced.

Now, with even stiffer competition, I looked and decided to rank Taylor #7 before this top 12 show airs. Comedy acts have never won, which goes against him. I think Taylor’s best shot is that he seems to be a quick-witted guy who has come up with some funny material each week, despite it being a little hit and miss. But the flirting thing with Heidi is starting to get old. I’d recommend that he comes out with a different theme this time if he wants to stay fresh and have a good shot at making next week’s finals.

YouTube Video: America’s Got Talent 8 – Top 12 (One Week Before Finals) – Forte’s “My Heart Will Go On” (September 10, 2013)

Act: Forte

Genre: Opera Trio

Live Blogging Notes:

Forte sang “My Heart Will Go On.” They may have just sent Brandon James home with this performance. I expect them to make it after seeing this performance. Howard and Howie played out the scene form Titanic where Rose was at the front of ship, and Jack was holding onto her.

I will link to the official YouTube video for Forte’s Top 12 (week before final) performance of “My Heart Will Go On” as soon as it has been uploaded onto AGT’s official channel.

Judges’ Comments On Forte’s Performance:

Howard predicted they will advance to the next week. Mel B said they are definitely going through. Their harmonies make her want to melt. Howie says they are worthy. America should vote for them. Heidi gave them 3 thumbs up.

Forte Predictions Before The Show Airs:

My rankings show Forte at #2 this week. I only have Kenichi ahead of them. I could also see Collins Key and Branden James as contenders for the top 2. Catapult was a contender but appears to have dropped a little.

Opera acts always do well in voting, and Forte is consistently good from round to round. The judges love them, and they have done well enough in voting both weeks without having to worry about a judges’ save. I really expect Forte to advance to next week’s finale. They seem to kind of play it safe, but that has worked for them so far and will probably work for them again.
