Results: Union Rags Wins The 2012 Belmont Stakes (Paynter 2nd and Atigun 3rd)

Update: Union Rags wins. Paynter led almost all the way but got caught in the last 50 to 100 yards or so. Paynter took 2nd (place). Atigun took 3rd (show).

The 2012 Belmont Stakes took place on Saturday, June 9, 2012. This third and final leg of the Triple Crown, which takes place at Elmont, New York’s Belmont Park, was set up to have a very exciting 2012 horse race. I’ll Have Another was competing for the Triple Crown after having already won the 2012 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

Update: I’ll Have Another suffered a leg injury and was forced to retire on the day before the race. I am keeping the odds up below for historical puroses, but I’ll Have another did not run the race.

Handicappers and fans that I have heard from felt that the longer Belmont race favored I’ll Have Another. He won coming from behind in the shorter Kentucky and Preakness races.

Below, you can see the race odds as they were on Friday (a day before the race). The final odds may have differed slightly but were similar:

1-Street Life 12/1
2-Unstoppable U 30/1
3-Union Rags 6/1
4-Atigun 30/1
5-Dullahan 5/1
6-Ravelo’s Boy 50/1
7-Five Sixteen 50/1
8-Guyana Star Dweej 50/1
9-Paynter 8/1
10-Optimizer 20/1
11-I’ll Have Another 4/5
12-My Adonis 20/1

Update Before Race: Dullahan and Union Rags have moved up to 5/2. They are essentially co-favorites to win a few minutes before the race.
