Jason Farol is a singer who is competing on the first season of the ABC reality TV singing contest Duets. His partner is Kelly Clarkson. Jason was very lucky that Duets extended the Top 8 for three full weeks. He was in last place the first week and then went to 7th place for his second performance. I thought he improved a lot on his performance last week, but the judges still had him placed 7th out of the 8 contestants. Jason then survived the bottom-2 sing-off by beating Alexis Foster in the judges’ scoring.
Heading into the Top 7, it’s pretty simple for Jason – either improve your results or go home unless you can survive another a cappella sing-off. Actually, I had Jason ranked 2nd out of 8 for his Week 3 performance. But the judges have already probably decided that he is one of the weaker contestants. That can have a result on the voting.
Jason needs to shock us with something different to improve his chances. Singing those sappy ballads is likely going to result in the same low scores. Song choice is important for Farol in the Top 7. He should pick a harder song that is going to show the judges some versatility when contrasted against his previous performances.
Kelly and Jason chose The Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction.” He sounds way too weak (almost like a Broadway version) in rehearsal.
In the real performance, Jason’s phrasing is pretty good in spots. But he isn’t showing the power to pull this off. Kelly is destroying him. He needed to sing something that was not a ballad, but this song was pitchy all over the place and lacked a rock vibe.
The judges said there was progress. I completely disagree. Jason was better last week and was underrated by the judges. Now they are overrating him. Duets is a joke in every possible way.
