Up to this Top 4 week, John Glosson has been my favorite contestant on the premiere season of Duets. He has done about as well as Bridget Carrington in the judges’ scoring, with J Rome being the judges’ clear favorite (first every week even if J Rome didn’t deserve it).
However, with the public now voting, it is going to be hard to predict how Duets shakes out. Since public voting is mostly about personality, that could either help or hurt John. For one, he doesn’t look or act like a star, which could lose him votes. On the other hand, he has that down-home “everyday guy” kind of vibe to him, which plays well to some voters. In the end, I fully expect John to at least finish 3rd because his talent is undeniable.
Jennifer Nettles is John’s celebrity partner in Duets. They just happen to be from the same town of Douglas, Georgia. Jennifer is practically destined to be the winner on the celebrity side of Duets. That is because either John or J Rome will win this singing contest.
John and Jennifer are singing “Georgia On My Mind.” This song is performed too much and has been performed on American Idol very well, especially the last couple of years. But most of the voters will likely not even consider that and probably didn’t even see those performances. So this is a good song choice if they can deliver to John’s usual vocal level. It is also a song with great emotional content.
Glosson’s glory notes were great, but he started out slow on this one. His voice was not projecting well in the beginning for some reason. But the last 45 seconds were great and had more power than what he usually shows. This was not his best performance, but it was certainly better than Bridget’s borefest.
Note: There may have been some technical problem with John’s microphone. Unfortunately, those things do happen on live shows. I think he has enough momentum to get past that, though. And the last part of the song was so good that it made up for it.
