J Rome is competing on the first season of Duets, and Jennifer Nettles is his celebrity duet partner. J Rome has emerged as the judges’ favorite on the first season of Duets. He has been the clear favorite in the judges’ scoring results by finishing 1st in the first week of the Top 8, tied for 1st in the second week, and first again in the third week.
We will see what kind of appeal he has with the average fan when the public starts voting in two weeks. Personally, I thought all of his performances were overrated. He has a really standard, non-descript R&B voice. Basically no one I can think of has won a singing contest like Duets with his voice. Note that Jermaine Paul won The Voice by singing a variety of different songs. Paul may call himself an R&B singer, but he has pop appeal and has a more versatile voice than J Rome.
That’s not to say that J Rome can’t win. It is certainly possible, especially because the show has pimped him to the moon and done everything but tell the public to vote for him. I will be voting for John Glosson, if anyone, unless I see more uniqueness from J Rome (provided that John continues to deliver). But his “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” was a definite step in the right direction for me.
Jennifer and J Rome are singing Michael Jackson’s “Pretty Young Thing” (PYT).
J Rome’s dancing is great. His vocals are consistent but nearly monotone. He’s not really doing anything unique with the song. It’s a karaoke version of the song with no real artistry. He actually had some soul last week and lost it again for this Top 7 performance.
Kelly thought he was impersonating Michael Jackson. John thought it was a little nasally, but Robin said that this his next step is a career in the music business.
