Why would this guy reach for the gun in the holster when, they later said they found a loaded gun on his person. If I was this guy and I have my own guy on me, I would not try to get a police officer's gun out of his holster.

It is not true that a student has his or her backpack on them at all times. Do not make blatantly false points if you are going to post.

That's what politicians are good for - arguing over meaningless things to make it look like they are doing something. Meanwhile, not one word at the national level over better school security mechanisms, which actually could save lives.

You made some great points, but I think the girl is onto something. The only item that a student has with him at all times is a backpack. If a school goes into lockdown the kid can protect his vital organs with his backpack, or if a shooter is nearby the kid can duck his head and run.

What I take away from this girl's altruistic attempt to preserve her own life and others is that she is actually doing something about gun violence. The grown-ups just argue.

The odds of getting in a car accident are astronomically higher than being shot as a school kid in a shooting. I've personally been in more than one accident. How many times have I been shot at? Zero, even after 8 years in the military. You have to balance it somewhere. It would also be safer to drive around in a military tank. Every possible safeguard under the sun can't be taken. At some point, you have to draw the line. The LifePlate is certainly an opportunistic idea. Hopefully, she gets filthy rich off of it. More power to her. But I won't be a customer.

What about poor kids? So the rich kids get protected and the poor kids, who are more likely to get shot due to the neighborhoods in which they live, don't get protection?

These things are going to end up being stolen. One may even be used as a bulletproof vest to help CARRY OUT an attack. Granted, the same argument could be made for guns, themselves. But there's a little something called the 2nd Amendment that changes that analysis.

P.S. The plane example is completely inappropriate. If you stopped doing checkpoints, you would eventually have rampant hijackings and bombings for sure - a 100% certainty. Since 9/11, not one deadly bomb has been successfully deployed or a hijacking pulled off on a U.S. plane.

But even if everyone in the entire school has a LifePlate, it won't stop a shooting. You could say the same for seat belts. But again, the odds of being involved in an accident are astronomically higher than being shot. That's why it is prudent to use seat belts. And they are already in the car, anyway (whether you are a rich passenger or a poor passenger).

The government should be doing its job and coming up with better school security instead of relying on these haphazard attempts at a solution like the LifePlate.

I am related to Lauren, but I am writing about what I personally believe. I think Lauren's product is a solution to a problem which currently has no answer. Statistically it is extremely unlikely that a plane would get hi-jacked, however we all voluntarily forgo our privacy and go through many security checks to ensure that the flight will be safe. There are life jackets for boats, helmets for bikes, seat belts for cars and many other precautions we take to ensure our safety. This is a lifesaving product created out of necessity. Just like any other safety device, it is unlikely that you would find yourself in the scenario where its use is necessary, but if or when you do, you are glad to have it. I am not saying that it is a perfect solution, but it will give parents ease of mind that their child is prepared just in case the worst happens. I think that having a solution like this is better than endless arguing and inaction while shootings continue to occur and innocent children continue to lose their lives.
