On July 31, 2012, the US women’s gymnastics team (dubbed the “Fab Five”) captured the team gold medal at the London 2012 Summer Olympics. They beat out silver-medalist Russia by five points, and Romania finished with the bronze.
Some are calling this the best US women’s gymnastics team ever. At least that is what Team USA coach John Geddert claimed after the Fab Five took the gold in convincing fashion.
In this CNN sports news video, which was uploaded on August 1, 2012, former team gold medalist Dominique Dawes (1996) is asked whether the Fab Five is the best team ever.
Dawes doesn’t really answer the question. Instead, she says the Fab Five is out of the shadows of the 1996 team. The 1996 team won gold in Atlanta, and Dawes says the hometown crowd helped deliver the win. But the Fab Five has done it on foreign soil.
Dawes is now looking forward to the women’s individual all-around, which will include Gabby Douglas and Ally Raisman. She says one of them will come through and become America’s next sweetheart.
The other members of the Fab Five are Jordyn Wieber, Kyla Ross, and McKayla Maroney.
