CNN News Video: Kim Klavin Talking About Her Dog, Blue, And Euthanasia By Gas Chamber For Some Shelter Animals

The following CNN animal news video contains an interview with author Kim Klavin. She is talking about the practice of euthanasia in animal shelters, which often uses a gas chamber to kill dogs, cats, and other would-be pets. This clip was added to the CNN video collection on September 8, 2012.

Kim Klavin’s dog, Blue, is featured in this story. She managed to save him from the gas chamber when she found him on PetFinder.com.

Kim has written a book about her experience called “Little Boy Blue.” She has the goal of getting euthanasia by gas chamber banned.

Kim attacks Person County, North Carolina, which apparently has a kill rate of 90 percent. They say they plan to get rid of the gas chamber simply because they are tired of animal activists talking about it. All that means is that they will kill the shelter animals some other way.

Note: The gas chamber does not appear to be cruel. It just puts a dog or other animal to sleep, and then the animal dies in its sleep. Klavin tries to suggest that the dogs suffer during the process. But she provides no reliable basis for this claim.

Mr. Boyd is awfully bold in calling himself a writer. First, the author’s name is Kim Kavin–not Klavin. And second, his assertion that the gas chamber is not cruel is backed by no evidence, though he criticizes Kavin for asserting that it is cruel and not citing evidence. “Note: The gas chamber does not appear to be cruel. It just puts a dog or other animal to sleep, and then the animal dies in its sleep. Klavin tries to suggest that the dogs suffer during the process. But she provides no reliable basis for this claim.”

Do you know how the gas chamber actually works? Did you know that animals are loaded into it en masse–dogs and cats–and that they often get into physical altercations with each other in the gas chamber–out of fear, overcrowding, aggression, panic, etc.? Do you know that it takes approximately 25 minutes for an animal to die this way? Did you know that it’s often ineffective and has to be turned on again to kill animals who are still alive after one cycle? And did you know that leaking gas chambers have been to blame for the deaths of shelter workers?

I suggest that you save your commentary for issues that you know something about, and that you use a simple Google search to check names and facts.

You can criticize anything I write, but don’t bother telling me not to write about it. It’s my blog. I’ll decide what I write about, when I want to write about it.

And Kim did NOT provide any basis for her claims. Did I say there is no basis in the world? Nope. But she sure did a poor job of explaining it for this interview. It is in HER best interest to provide better information for HER cause when she has a national platform.
