The following CNN news video contains footage of an interview with Laura Kaeppeler, who is the Miss America for 2012. The video was added to CNN’s website on August 20, 2012.
Kaeppeler starts by talking about her rigorous schedule. She travels about 20,000 total miles per month, which includes taking a plane flight roughly every other day. She says Miss America has a full-time job throughout the entire year of her reign.
She is then asked about her focus on mentoring kids, including Big Brothers Big Sisters. Her personal cause is to advocate for children who have parents in prison. She was inspired to do this because her own father spent some time in jail.
Laura then talks about how mentors helped her get through the hard times when her dad was in prison. She didn’t say who her mentor was, though.
Kaeppeler then said there are many ways you can help Big Brothers Big Sisters if you don’t feel confident being a mentor. There are some non-mentor volunteer positions, and you can also financially support the organization.
