CNN Animal News Video – Mount Bierstadt, Colorado: Missy The German Shepherd Dog Rescued After 8 Days

The following CNN animal news video is about a German shepherd named Missy. It was uploaded to the CNN website on August 16, 2012.

The CNN video page for this story seems highly deceptive. They claim the owner “abandoned” the dog. In actuality, even the video admits the the owner contacted authorities to try to get a rescue mission together. The owner said that he did not have the strength to carry the dog down after it became injured and couldn’t walk. Using the term “abandoned” here is highly controversial. That is just not what happened. The authorities refused to put a rescue party together, saying it was too risky for an animal.

At any rate, some hikers heard about Missy and decided to hike up Mt. Bierstadt (Colorado) and try to find her. They did find her and took turns bringing the dog down in a backpack.

Now, the owner wants the dog back. Of course, the rescuers of the German shepherd are protesting, saying the owner doesn’t deserve the dog back. But again, this is what they are saying on this tape. But were they told about the owner trying to get a rescue together before making their comments? Obviously, they were under the impression that the owner simply abandoned Missy.

CNN gets an F for using the word “abandoned” in the title on this video page. I wonder if it is defamation. Maybe it isn’t because the owner is not identified. But they are certainly pushing the envelope here with such careless wording.

THANK YOU for catching this!!! SO MANY people are passing judgement. The story is a little deeper than media would like for it to be. The facts are just not as good for ratings. Bummer.

I understand your trying to defend your brother Anthony Ortolani, Kat aka shadykat5150 but you are entirely off-field. He irresponsibily submitted an innocent animal to circumstances beyond it’s control that resulted in life and death for that dog. Your brother’s decision to “bail” and abandon that dog was inexcusable. Have read your brother’s excuses on another site and they just don’t wash — sorry! Also have read your little message demanding that the people who risked their lives to save this living and breathing creature “return” her to your irresponsible brother. People are concerned about this dog now and in the future and your brother’s post stating that “should this ever happen” again was more than enough for me to convince me he should never have this dog back in his possession ever. His actions are not only disgusting but cowardly. The fact that he left that poor dog (it was over a week before the rescuers were able to save her life) that she was left on that mountain top hurt, thirsty and left for dead, without your cowardly brother lifting a finger. The fact that he likes to lift weights before work and enjoys working 12 hour shifts days in a row is another fine reason he should not own any pet. This dog trusted him with her life and was rewarded by being abandoned to die alone on the top of a mountain. His actions disgust me and many more people than you can imagine. Good luck with your defence.
